Fair Trade fortnight
23 February – 8 March 2009
With unfair trade rules and giant companies squeezing poor farmers
in the developing world out of business and into further poverty,
now is a vital time to stand up and say “we won’t
stand for unfair trade”.
The Fairtrade Foundation will producing a guide full of great
ideas but to set you going we’ve set out three steps for
a brilliant couple of weeks.
What is Fair Trade School?
A school that is committed to Fairtrade, sells and uses Fairtrade
products as far as it can, and raises awareness of Fairtrade
in the school and local community.
This is a great way of promoting the ethical and social awareness
of your school and can be linked to PHSE on the curriculum.
Tower Hamlets Fairtrade Borough
Tower Hamlets was awarded Fairtrade Borough Status in October
2006. As a result of our support London became a Fairtrade
City in 2008.
Where are we now?
The next stage is to continue to lobby retailers, schools, businesses
as well as the council itself to increase support for Fairtrade.
Tell us what you are doing
We are gathering evidence to report back to the Fairtrade Foundation
to renew Tower Hamlets Fairtrade Borough Status. We need evidence
to show that Tower Hamlets and our schools are increasing their
involvement in Fairtrade, through staff rooms, assemblies,
lesson activities, events, school council work, guest speakers…
Please email the Humanities Education Centre, to tell us what
you are doing to promote fairtrade hec@gn.apc.org
