This Day, declared by the UN General Assembly, aims to deepen public awareness of the need to preserve and enhance the environment. The date recalls the opening day of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment (Stockholm, 1972), which led to the establishment of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Vision 2020 is the global initiative for the elimination of preventable blindness, which was launched jointly by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) and many other groups such as NGOs, professional associations and eye care
institutions and corporations. The main aim of Vision 2020 is to eliminate avoidable blindness by working together giving every person the right to sight.
