Make It Happen
Tower Hamlets youngsters are being given the chance to make a real difference
to their borough, thanks to the Youth Opportunity Fund.
The Youth Opportunity
Fund (YOF) allows 11-19 year-olds to apply for funding to help start
up new activities or make improvements to the buildings they use in
the borough. Local youngsters can receive between £500 and £5,000
to run activities such as after-school sports clubs, or between £5,000
and £10,000 to refurbish buildings like their local community
centre.
More information
about the Youth Opportunity Fund can be found www.amp.uk.net and
application forms will soon be downloadable to access the funds. A
second generic email will be sent to all contacts, but this is coming
to you because of your particular specialism. _________________________________________________________
New faith
website launched
Tower Hamlets Interfaith Forum has launched their new website alongside a council
plan to ensure residents aren’t discriminated against because of their
religion or belief.
The revamped ‘Faith
in Tower Hamlets’ site is now more accessible and easier
to navigate. It includes an interactive map of places of worship
in the borough and allows residents to request updates about local
festivals and events.
Speaking at the
launch event at Mile End Park Ecology Pavilion last week, Deputy
Leader of the Council and Equalities lead Councillor Sirajul Islam
said: “Tower Hamlets Interfaith Forum provides a great opportunity
to celebrate the significant contribution that faith organisations
make to the lives of people in Tower Hamlets."

Black History Month 2008
Each year, Tower Hamlets Council helps to facilitate and publicise a
programme of events in the run up to Black History Month in October.
Now a fixed and important part of the annual calendar, it provides a
forum to highlight the positive contributions made by the black and ethnic
minority community and celebrates black history, experience and culture.
This year there are
many anniversaries to commemorate, including 40 years since Dr Martin
Luther King's untimely death, 50 years since Claudia
Jones 'the Mother of Notting Hill Carnival' founded the first Black newspaper
in Britain, 'The West Indian Gazette', and 60 years since the SS Empire
Windrush arrived at Tilbury Docks.
