Black History
Month 2008
Each year, Tower
Hamlets Council helps to facilitate and publicise a programme of events
in the run up to Black History Month in October. Now a fixed and important
part of the annual calendar, it provides a forum to highlight the positive
contributions made by the black and ethnic minority community and celebrates
black history, experience and culture.
This year there are
many anniversaries to commemorate, including 40 years since Dr Martin
Luther King's untimely death, 50 years since Claudia Jones 'the Mother
of Notting Hill Carnival' founded the first Black newspaper in Britain,
'The West Indian Gazette', and 60 years since the SS Empire Windrush
arrived at Tilbury Docks.
