LGBT parents, and their children, often face discrimination and prejudice, from doctors and health care professionals, nurseries and schools, from their extended family and from many others areas.

Subsequently, LGBT parents must work harder to prove that the love, support and commitment that they give to their children is what defines a family and NOT the sexual orientation or gender identity of the parents.

The campaigning group for lesbians, gay men and bisexuals has a wealth of info available on parenting.

 

Beyond BarriersThis project has closed down but the website still aims to provide comprehensive, reliable information on a wide range of issues affecting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. And children who have lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender parents.

     

FamilyonwardsA help-site for parents and grandparents with an article by Jill Curtis on Gay and Lesbian Families, including resources for gay and lesbian parents with helpful articles, books and videos.

Pink ParentsOffers a range of support services and social activities for all LGBT families. Whatever stage you are at; whether you are considering parenting, have grandchildren, are fostering or adopting or are an uncle or aunt, PinkParents can offer you support and a place to meet new friends.

 

Parent Line Plus logo Offers support to anyone parenting a child; the child's parents, stepparents, grandparents and foster parents. Runs free telephone and email helplines, parenting groups and workshops and offers information leaflets.

a Civil Partnership.

The Civil Partnership Act 2004 came into operation on 5 December 2005 and enables a same-sex couple to register as civil partners of each other.

     

Rainbow Network Fact File: Adoption, adoption rights were due to be part of the British government's Civil Partnership Act for same-sex couples, but this was dropped.
So what is the current state of play?

A collection of personal accounts of lesbian and gay parents from many different social and ethnic backgrounds. This volume is designed to dispel misconceptions and encourage gay men and lesbians who are thinking about adopting or fostering children.

Families Like Mine: Children of gay parents tell it like it is by Abigail Garner (HarperCollins, 2004)
Abigail Garner was five when her parents divorced and her dad came out as gay. Growing up immersed in gay culture, she now calls herself a "culturally queer" heterosexual woman. This is a deeply personal book about gay parenting, from the perspective of grown children raised in these families.

A practical guide for gay parents and would-be gay parents, discussing all of the issues involved, from finding sensitive schools to legal issues and other general parenting tips.


Same Sex Intimacies by Jeffrey Weeks, Brian Heaphy and Catherine Donovan (Routledge, 2001)
This book discusses the relationships and families that gay men and lesbians form with each other. It also discusses gay parenting, with case studies and quotes from gay parents.
