Lesbian
gay, bisexual, and transgender health is emerging as a national
health concern due to a growing body of research that shows a
wide gap in the quality and availability of health-care services
geared toward the LBGT community.
We
need to ensure that all individuals, no matter what their sexual
orientation or gender identity, have access to compassionate,
competent health care. All individuals have the right to a
safe, healthy and joyful expression of their sexuality, however
they define it.

“Research
suggests that LGBT people have very specific concerns that are not
necessarily met by service providers.
Research has demonstrated that LGBT people can experience broad social
inequalities.
Discrimination and homophobia can have a significant impact on how they
are treated by some health care providers.
Experience of discrimination in other areas of their lives, such as
home, school or work, means LGBT people may be reluctant to disclose
their sexual orientation to their GP, because they anticipate discrimination,
but then fail to receive appropriate health care.”-
